'We all make mistakes' - Mount insists Chelsea squad remains behind Kepa

Kepa and Mason Mount

Mason Mount insists that Chelsea's players haven't given up on Kepa despite his latest error in the 2-0 home defeat to Liverpool on Sunday.

The mistake comes as the Blues are on the verge of completing a £22m (€24m/$29m) deal for Rennes goalkeeper Edouard Mendy, who will compete for the No 1 spot with the Spain international.

The decision to add another goalkeeper in the transfer market will increase Frank Lampard's options after he has seen Kepa struggle for almost the entire time since he re-joined the club as manager.

Mount, who completed 90 minutes against Liverpool, is keen to offer his support to Kepa.

"We know that Kepa is an experienced goalkeeper, he will look at it and he knows where he needs to look at it and improve but we are all going to be behind him," he said after the game.

“We all make mistakes, I make mistakes, I give the ball away but it’s just in their half and I can give the ball away and it’s different when it’s the back four, but as I said, we are all behind him, we all support him and it doesn’t matter because now we need to look towards the next game now."

Lampard acknowledged the mistake after the Premier League match and has said that Willy Caballero will play against Barnsley in the League Cup, having already earmarked him for an appearance in the domestic competition.

Chelsea will briefly analyse what went wrong against Liverpool before moving onto their Championship opponents for Wednesday in a quick turnaround between games.

After seeing Chelsea add £200m ($250m) of new signings from the sidelines, Mount admits that the picture has changed at Chelsea and that they now want to achieve much more than last season's top-four finish.

“The game could have been different but it is what is. We look at the game and we know where we can improve," he said about the performance, before moving onto the club's expectations.

“We have definitely got better expectations than last season. We know we can do very well, we’ve got a very good team, but probably it takes some time to bond and to click together.

“We’ve got quite a few new players coming in and, as I said, it takes time sometimes to gel and we know it’s going to take a couple of games to understand each other and understand the way other people play.

“When we get our full rhythm, I think we’ll be firing and we’ll be scoring goals and hopefully get as many three points as we can. For me, if I look at the team we want to do better. We don’t want to accept fourth place; we want to push to the top.
