Premier League Betting: In-form Arsenal 14/1 to finish in top four after win over Newcastle20-Jan-2021, 05:44 pm
A comfortable 3-0 victory for Arsenal over Newcastle on Monday night moved the Gunners into the top half of the Premier League table for the first time since November 1 and they are now 14/1 (15.0) with bet365 to finish in the top four.
Arsenal are now only seven points behind fourth-placed Liverpool, although they have played 19 games which is at least one more than the majority of other teams in the division and contributes to the lengthy 14/1 (15.0) offered on a top-four place.
Crucially, the Gunners have regained momentum after a poor opening third of the season which saw them win only four of their first 14 games and embarkon a seven-match winless run stretching from November 8 until Boxing Day, at which point bet365 had them as 40/1 (41.0).
Their form since then displays the remarkable turnaround in fortunes, with Arsenal keeping four clean sheets in their last five and scoring 11 goals in that time.
All four of those clean sheets did come against teams in the bottom half but, combined with their 2-0 FA Cup win over Newcastle, it still represents their best defensive run since February 2009 when they kept six in a row in all competitions.
On top of a strong back line, Arsenal’s attacking corps have finally found their groove. Indeed, the Gunners had managed just 12 goals in their opening 14 matches – meaning the 11 goals in their most recent five games accountfor almost 48 per cent of their strikes this term.
The sudden influx of goals is no fluke, either. The Gunners could only muster 46 shots on target and create 105 chances across their first 14 games - both the fifth-lowest amounts in the league – whilst their tally of 146 total shots was the sixth-lowest.
For comparison, Liverpool recorded 95 shots on target in the same time period with Manchester United, Leeds and Chelsea all joint-second with 78, with Liverpool, Leeds and Manchester City all recording over 200 total shots.
Since Christmas Day, though, Arsenal lead the league in total shots (78) and shots on target (32), whilst only Chelsea are ahead of them in terms of chances created - going some way to prove that a corner may have been turned at the illustrious north London club.
