'Man Utd owe Fernandes a lot already' - Diogo Jota praises 'ambitious' Portugal team-mate

Bruno Fernandes is Manchester United's "most ambitious" player, according to Diogo Jota, who says the club already "owe a lot" to their EUR55 million (?48m/$60m) January signing.

Fernandes completed a big-money move to Old Trafford from Sporting at the start of the year, after a drawn-out transfer saga spanning over a year finally reached its conclusion.

It was initially suggested that the 25-year-old might struggle to adapt to the demands of Premier League football after spending the last three years of his career in the Primeira Liga, but he quickly silenced any doubters with a string of outstanding displays.

The Portugal international has hit three goals and laid on four assists in his first nine appearances for United across all competitions, injecting a much-needed creative spark into Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's starting XI.

He has also adopted a leadership role, taking it upon himself to bring the best out of his new team-mates while commanding the ball at every possible opportunity, endearing himself to the Red Devils faithful in the process.

United were unbeaten in 11 matches prior to the coronavirus-enforced break in the 2019-20 season, with Fernandes seen as the driving force behind that impressive run and potentially the man to help revive past glories at Old Trafford.

Jota has witnessed the playmaker's talents up close on the international stage with Portugal, and says it is clear how much of a difference he has made to Solskjaer's squad since arriving in Manchester.

"I don't know if he is the best [player at United] but he's the most ambitious. And that makes a difference," the Wolves striker told Record.

"You can clearly see the difference between United with and without Bruno Fernandes. He takes on the responsibility and aspires for more than what they are doing.

"I think they owe him a lot already. And that is not only related to his quality, but also to his ambition and personality."

United sit fifth in the Premier League standings after 29 fixtures, three points behind Chelsea in the race for the final Champions League qualification position.

They are also through to the FA Cup quarter-finals, and look set to reach the same stage in the Europa League after beating LASK 5-0 in the first leg of their last-16 tie on March 12.
